Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) Awareness Month!

Throughout April, we will be raising awareness about ACEs and their profound impact on individuals' lives. ACEs, which encompass various forms of trauma experienced during childhood, can have lasting effects on physical, mental, and emotional health well into adulthood. As part of our commitment to promoting understanding and support for those affected by ACEs, we will be organizing a series of events, activities, and educational resources throughout the month. These initiatives aim to:

  • Increase Awareness: We will share information and resources to educate our community about the prevalence and consequences of ACEs.

  • Foster Compassion: By sharing stories and testimonials from individuals who have experienced ACEs, we hope to foster empathy and understanding among our community members.

  • Provide Support: We will highlight resources, support services, and organizations that offer assistance to individuals and families affected by ACEs.

  • Advocate for Change: We will advocate for policies and initiatives aimed at preventing ACEs, supporting survivors, and promoting resilience and healing.

We invite you to join us in recognizing ACEs Awareness Month by participating in our events, sharing our resources with your networks, and engaging in conversations about ACEs and trauma-informed care. Together, we can create a more supportive and compassionate community for all. Stay tuned for more information about our upcoming events and initiatives. In the meantime, please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or would like to get involved.

A message from Dr. Torie:

For more than three decades I have helped mentees reach their full potential. I started as a mentor in high school during my senior year. I take pride in my Mentorship where I have mentored thousands of students and supported them as they strive to reach their full potential for over 25 years. As an Educator with 20 years of experience, I have educated students from all facets of life. As a current Administrator, I am aware of the effects that COVID-19 has on both students and teachers.  According to the American Psychological Association, not only are our students dealing with COVID-19 stress as a student (APA, 2020), there is a possibility they have to deal with the impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) on their physical and mental health. Teachers have to deal with both the impact of COVID-19 on their students and on themselves which can also be stressful. For students, if stress is not properly addressed and reduced, it can lead to long-term behavior issues, health complications, and diseases that are caused by ACEs (APA, 2020). COVID-19 still exists!

Be VicTorieus Foundation

While I love my work and thrive on the great experiences I have created thus far, I have decided to go full force into building my entrepreneur business. I am combining my love of mentoring, and I am proud to announce the Be Victorieus Foundation, a non-profit organization that provides mentorship to young people, especially those with Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), to help them reach their educational and career goals.

The foundation's goal is to help young people overcome the challenges they face due to ACEs and achieve their full potential. Our organization believes that every young person deserves the opportunity to succeed, regardless of their background.
We provide a variety of services to help young people achieve their goals, including:

Mentoring: Our mentors provide one-on-one support to help young people develop the skills and confidence they need to succeed.
Tutoring: Our tutors provide academic support to help young people improve their grades and prepare for college and careers.

Scholarships: We offer scholarships to help young people pay for college or other post-secondary education.
We also offer workshops and training programs to help young people develop the skills they need to succeed in school and their careers. These programs include:

Career development workshops: These workshops help young people explore career options and develop the skills they need to get a job.

Commitment to Teaching & Working with Youth

I always wanted to be an Educator and am passionate about working with young people. I received my Doctorate from Chicago State University in Educational Leadership and Administration. I have also received two Master's Degrees in Business and Special Education.
I taught in Chicago Public Schools for five years and in the Thornton Township District 205 for over 10 years. I currently work as the Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Facilitator with Forney ISD.

Connecting with Students, Teachers and Parents

In my current role, it is my responsibility to ensure students are properly identified so they may receive the appropriate services. In addition to my working closely with the students, I also interact directly with classroom teachers and other administrators and am in regular contact with parents and community leaders. My responsibilities are many, from collaborating and mentoring to testing and evaluating to keeping everyone engaged.

My past role as Director of Student Activities will never leave me. Extracurricular Activity is Key! As an Educator, I developed positive relations with the students and as a result, I became a mentor to many students and we still keep in touch after leaving high school. Parents were able to connect and support me based on their student's involvement and success. Those parents were also able to develop a rapport with me.

Staying in Touch

The most rewarding part of my career is the interaction with and involvement of students.  When I worked in high school, former students always came back to visit or find a way to keep in touch. I have watched my mentees grow into positions and careers and it is humbling, yet rewarding to see their success!

Teaching continues to be an important part of my life and in the future, I plan to continue research for the betterment of my community.

Always Follow Your Passion

Do not give up on your goals and aspirations. We ALL have a story! Do NOT let your story define you. Turn your story into purpose and turn your purpose into passion. My passion is helping out youth and breaking generational curses. I teach for a purpose and to impact your youth because they are our future!
